China’s summer box office is off to a blockbuster start! The season, running from June 1 to August 31, has already raked in 2 billion yuan ($275 million) within its first month, fueled by a mix of heartfelt dramas and quirky comedies.
Leading the charge is Moments We Shared, a drama about a city worker reconnecting with his roots in his hometown. Since its June 22 release, it’s dominated the charts like a TikTok trend. Close behind is the time-travel teen comedy Be My Friend, where a rebellious girl bonds with her mom’s younger self—think 13 Going on 30 meets Gen-Z humor.
Rounding out the top three is crime caper Walk the Line, serving up laughs and thrills as cops tackle organized crime.
This summer, 88 films are set to hit screens—more than a Marvel marathon! But Beijing film critic Zhu Yuqing notes a twist: many releases are getting greenlit just weeks before premiere dates, leaving less time for marketing. And while the lineup is packed, some industry watchers say big-budget spectacles are MIA this year. Could indie gems steal the spotlight instead?
With audiences flocking to theaters, China’s cinematic summer is shaping up to be a rollercoaster of popcorn-worthy stories. Stay tuned for updates!
