Archaeologists in Peru have uncovered an ancient ceremonial temple buried beneath desert sands—a discovery that rewinds history to a mysterious pre-Hispanic era! The 4,000-year-old structure, found near Zana in northern Peru, reveals clues about early religious rituals and mythologies that shaped the region.
Led by Luis Muro of Peru’s Pontifical Catholic University, the team discovered skeletal remains of three adults, possibly ritual offerings, and a striking wall carving of a bird-headed human figure—a design older than the famous Chavin culture.
“This temple could be part of a religious tradition predating cultures we know well,” Muro said. Nearby, remnants of a later Moche-era temple were also found, hinting at layers of history in Peru’s archaeological goldmine.
