Once a remote secret, Xizang Autonomous Region’s Medog County is now 2025’s breakout travel destination thanks to the newly opened Medog Highway. This engineering marvel has connected the mountainous area to mainland China’s tourism circuit, creating opportunities for locals like 24-year-old guide Kunsang Norbu.
🌄 "Last year, we only saw hikers and researchers. Now we’re hosting photography groups and adventure seekers weekly," says Norbu, who’s traded yak herding for sharing his culture with visitors. Local homestays report 300% bookings growth since the highway’s June 2025 opening.
Travel analysts highlight Medog’s unique appeal: subtropical forests meeting snow peaks, and preserved Monpa ethnic traditions. With direct flights from Beijing and Shanghai launching this December, 2026 is expected to bring even bigger crowds. 🚗💨
