Move over, influencers—nature’s most photogenic stars are stealing the spotlight in south China! The stunning bee-eater, dubbed China's 'prettiest bird,' is drawing crowds of photographers to Haikou’s Wuyuan River National Wetland Park during its annual summer nesting season.
These vibrant birds—recognized nationally for their ecological value and listed as endangered by IUCN—have returned yearly since 2018, thanks to major environmental upgrades. Local efforts, including a protected 8.39-hectare zone established in 2019, transformed the area into a safe haven for the species.
‘It’s like a live NatGeo documentary,’ said one shutterbug, capturing the birds’ acrobatic dives and iridescent plumage. From May to July, the wetland becomes a stage for their breeding rituals, proving that eco-recovery can be both impactful and Insta-worthy.
