As Shanghai continues to manage its recent COVID-19 surge, volunteers like Hou Xiaojie are stepping up to support frontline efforts. On April 14, the city reported 2,573 confirmed cases and 25,146 asymptomatic infections – and behind those numbers are countless stories of resilience.
Hou, a volunteer at an isolation hotel in Xuhui District, opened up about his daily routine: distributing meals, coordinating supplies, and offering emotional support to quarantined residents. 'It’s physically exhausting, but seeing people smile makes it worth it,' he told CGTN Global Stringer. 'Many guests here are anxious. A kind word or joke can lighten their day.'
His team works 12-hour shifts in full protective gear, battling both heat and fatigue. Yet Hou emphasizes camaraderie: 'We’ve become a family. When one of us stumbles, others step in.' He also shared heartwarming moments, like helping a child video-call their parents or celebrating a resident’s birthday with improvised cakes 🎂.
As cases remain high, Hou urges understanding: 'This isn’t just Shanghai’s fight. We all play a part in protecting each other.' His message to young people globally? 'Compassion bridges cultures. Even small actions build hope.'
