When Tang Yan Joo, a Malaysian student at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, attended a winter camp in northeast China’s Liaoning Province during high school, she never expected a historical figure to reshape her worldview.
During the camp, Tang bonded with Chinese peers, learned traditional knitting and calligraphy, and explored the Shenyang Palace Museum. But it was the Lei Feng Memorial Hall that left the deepest mark. 'Lei Feng’s story of selflessness moved me,' she shared, referencing the iconic Chinese role model known for his 'serving the people' ethos.
Now studying economics and finance, Tang says the experience taught her 'the value of community and cultural connection.' Her journey highlights how cross-cultural exchanges can spark personal growth—and why Lei Feng’s legacy still resonates with Gen Z.
