Tigray’s Unheard Voices: Sexual Violence Surges Post-Peace Deal

A shocking new study reveals that sexual violence in Ethiopia’s Tigray region has continued unchecked even after a historic peace agreement ended a brutal two-year civil war in 2022. 🚨 The report, released by Physicians for Human Rights and the Organization for Justice and Accountability in the Horn of Africa, analyzed medical records from 304 survivors—and the findings are devastating.

🔍 At least 128 assaults occurred after the November 2022 peace deal between Ethiopia’s federal government and Tigrayan forces. Nearly all attackers were identified as military personnel, often from neighboring Eritrea—a country not included in the AU-brokered accord. Survivors described harrowing ordeals: 76% faced gang assaults, 94% reported no condom use, and some were abducted for repeated attacks.

💔 “The world has accountability mechanisms, but everything’s in diplomats’ hands—a recipe for failure,” says human rights expert Martin Witteveen. Meanwhile, the African Union’s decision to pause its abuse investigation has sparked outrage, with activists alleging “undue political pressure” from Ethiopia.

🌍 As Ethiopia joins BRICS this week, survivors plead: Will global leaders prioritize justice over geopolitics? For Tigray’s women and girls, peace remains an empty promise.
