Brazilian Student Translates ‘The Romance of the Three Kingdoms’ to Portuguese

🌟 Meet Rud Eric Paixão, a passionate Brazilian PhD student from São Paulo who is bringing one of China's greatest literary works to Portuguese readers. With degrees in history and Chinese language and literature, Rud embarked on the ambitious journey of translating The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in 2021.

As a freelance translator and dedicated scholar in translation studies, Rud dives deep into the intricate narratives of this classic novel. His favorite characters, Cao Cao and Zhou Yu, highlight his appreciation for complex personalities. \"Cao Cao is incredibly authentic and should be judged by the values of his own culture and times,\" Rud explains. In the chapter \"The Hero of Brewing Wine,\" he admires Cao Cao's intelligence and his meticulous approach to assessing someone's worthiness for great responsibility.

Rud also champions Zhou Yu, noting how often this brilliant strategist is overlooked in favor of Zhuge Liang. \"In the battle of Chibi, everything Zhou Yu did was ultimately attributed to Zhuge Liang,\" he points out. This perspective sheds light on the central themes of loyalty, justice, humanness, and virtue that permeate the book through its diverse characters.

Rud's translation work not only bridges cultures but also makes these timeless stories accessible to a new generation of readers in Brazil. His dedication ensures that the rich tapestry of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms continues to inspire and educate.
