In the heart of Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp, where explosions echo nightly and families shelter in fear, a small beacon of hope persists: a makeshift school defying the chaos of conflict. Seventeen Palestinians were killed in a double Israeli strike here on June 18, part of what Al-Jazeera called “another bloody night” across central Gaza.
But amid rubble and rationed supplies, teacher Umm Hani Abd and her colleagues continue lessons for children displaced by fighting. “We’re using whatever we have – broken chalk, torn notebooks,” she told CGTN Global Stringer in a recent video dispatch. “Education is their only weapon now.”
The school – housed in a repurposed tent – serves families evacuated from Rafah after recent escalations. With no formal curriculum or safe spaces, educators prioritize trauma support and basic literacy. “When bombs fall, we sing,” says Umm Hani. “When the sky quiets, we solve math problems.”
As cross-border negotiations stall, this tiny classroom reminds the world that childhoods can’t wait for ceasefires.
