Move over, roses—peonies are having a global moment! 🌍 The 2025 World Peony Conference kicked off this week in Heze, Shandong Province, China’s 'peony capital,' spotlighting the flower’s role as a cultural bridge between East and West.

At the heart of this floral diplomacy? Shi Zhenshan, an 80-year-old dough sculptor who’s turned peonies into edible art 🎨. Since moving to Los Angeles in 2006, Shi has mesmerized locals with his vibrant creations, blending Heze’s peony legacy with ancient dough-crafting techniques passed down through generations. 'Americans love peonies,' Shi told CGTN. 'Now they’re learning these blooms mean prosperity and joy in Chinese culture.'

Recognized by UNESCO as an intangible heritage master, Shi’s work shows how traditional art forms adapt abroad—his LA studio now buzzes with workshops where peonies made of flour and dye become conversation starters about Chinese symbolism.

With the Heze International Peony Festival running alongside the global conference, organizers aim to cement the flower’s status as a cross-cultural icon. Think of it as floral soft power in full bloom 🌺.
