New Zealand's unique carnivorous snails are in a race against time as climate change and invasive species threaten their survival.
A shocking new report reveals 43 types of these 'ninja snails' – known for their striking spiral shells 🌀 – are now one step away from vanishing forever. 'If current trends continue, we could lose 95% of these species within decades,' warns Department of Conservation expert Dr. Kath Walker.
🐀 The Wainuia clarki snail saw its safe island home invaded by rats, while mainland populations battle hungry hedgehogs and drier forests caused by rising temperatures. Only six snail species showed improvement among 109 studied.
Conservationists urge immediate action: controlling predators, protecting habitats, and tackling climate change. 'This is our last chance to save these living natural artworks,' Walker told reporters.
