On a stormy Sunday morning, Nanchang, the capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, was hit by severe thunderstorms that left four people dead and more than 10 others injured. 🌩️💔
Local authorities reported that the extreme weather brought strong winds and heavy rainfall, causing widespread damage across the city. Video footage circulating online showed shattered windows and glass shards scattered everywhere, painting a vivid picture of the storm's intensity.
Tragically, three individuals lost their lives after falling from a tall building in a residential area on Bayuehu Road during the tempest. The exact cause of these fatal incidents is still under investigation by the local public security department, according to China Daily.
Meng Minghua, the chief forecaster at the Jiangxi Meteorological Service, explained that the severe rainstorm included a downburst wind system—a powerful, radial wind that can surge from a single point on high-rise buildings. This sudden gust led to rapid pressure changes, causing windows to break and exacerbating the damage.
Furthermore, Meng highlighted the Venturi effect, where wind speed increases as it flows through tight channels between closely spaced buildings, making conditions even more dangerous. 🌬️🏢
In response, the National Meteorological Center has renewed alerts for torrential rain (blue alert) and severe convective weather (yellow alert) as Tuesday morning approaches. China uses a four-tier color-coded weather warning system, with red as the most severe, followed by orange, yellow, and blue.
Stay safe and stay informed as severe weather continues to impact the region. 🌧️📢
