Sydney on High Alert as Torrential Rains Cause Massive Flooding
Sydney, home to over 5 million people, was drenched by nearly a month's worth of rainfall on Friday. The city received 111 millimeters (4.4 inches) of rain in just 24 hours, according to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology, almost matching the typical April rainfall of 121.5 mm.
The downpour isn't easing up anytime soon, with forecasts predicting up to 200 mm in some areas before the coastal trough moves east towards the Tasman Sea on Saturday.
Stay Indoors and Safe
New South Wales State Premier Chris Minns addressed the media in a televised conference, emphasizing the severity of the situation: \"This is a significant weather event… it is most important that you don't take unnecessary risks at the moment.\"
The heavy rains have already caused disruptions, damaging rail equipment at a major Sydney train station and delaying morning commuters. Emergency crews have been swamped, handling over 500 calls and rescuing seven people from floodwaters. Several rivers in the east are under warning.
Warragamba Dam Nearing Capacity
Warragamba Dam, supplying 80% of Sydney's water, is currently at 96% capacity. Officials warn it could spill over as early as Monday once the storm subsides.
