The Nepal Army is tackling Mother Nature’s biggest trash challenge yet: a 50-day mission to clear 10 tons of waste from Mount Qomolangma (known globally as Everest), Lhotse, and Nuptse. The initiative, kicking off this week, also aims to recover five bodies left on the mountains—a grim reminder of the risks climbers face.
With support from Sherpa teams, three military units will scale the 8,848.86-meter-high Qomolangma—which straddles Nepal and the Chinese mainland—and its neighboring peaks. Brig Gen Sanjay Deuja called it a 'critical step' to protect the Himalayas’ fragile ecosystem.
This isn’t the army’s first eco-warrior move; they’ve removed over 100 tons of trash from the region since 2019. But this year’s goal? Think ‘Netflix documentary meets real-life heroism’—except the stakes are literal mountains.
