Southern Brazil Battles Catastrophic Flooding
Rescue teams in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state raced against time Tuesday to deliver aid to flooded cities like Porto Alegre, where desperate residents queued for drinking water. At least 95 lives have been lost, with 131 still missing, according to disaster relief officials.
‘The Crisis Is Still Developing’
Governor Eduardo Leite warned that casualty numbers could rise as relentless rains continue. Over 160,000 people have fled their homes, while submerged streets and damaged infrastructure complicate relief efforts. “The emergency is ongoing,” Leite said.
A Region Underwater
Nearly 400 municipalities are affected – the worst natural disaster in the state’s history. Forecasters predict more rain, deepening fears of prolonged shortages and displacement. Teams are prioritizing clean water distribution as hospitals report rising cases of waterborne illnesses.
