Tragic news from Indonesia as the death toll from the weekend flash floods and mudslides in West Sumatra has risen to 67, with 20 people still missing. Authorities are tirelessly working to locate the missing individuals, with five of the previously missing found deceased.
Over 4,000 residents have been evacuated to nearby buildings and temporary shelters to ensure their safety. The devastating floods have caused extensive damage, destroying at least 521 houses, 31,985 hectares of land including vital rice fields, 19 bridges, and most of the main roads in the affected areas.
In response to the disaster, the Indonesian government is planning to relocate survivors from unlivable and high-risk areas to safer locations. BNPB head Suharyanto announced that data is currently being gathered to determine the number of survivors needing relocation, and efforts are underway to find suitable areas for building new homes.
As the community rallies together in the face of this natural calamity, support and solidarity are more important than ever. Stay safe and stay informed.
