Sumatra Floods Claim 67 Lives, Thousands Evacuated as Relocation Plans Unfold

🌧️ The recent weekend flash floods and mudslides in Indonesia's West Sumatra province have taken a tragic toll, claiming 67 lives and leaving 20 people still missing. 💔 The national disaster management agency BNPB announced that five of the previously missing have been found deceased, raising the death toll from 62 reported just yesterday.

In response to the disaster, more than 4,000 residents have been evacuated to nearby buildings and temporary shelters to ensure their safety. 🏠 The floods have caused extensive damage, destroying at least 521 houses, 31,985 hectares of land including vital rice fields, 19 bridges, and most of the main roads in the area. 🚧

As part of the recovery efforts, the Indonesian government is planning to relocate survivors from unlivable and disaster-prone areas to safer locations. BNPB head Suharyanto stated that data is being collected to determine who needs to be relocated and to identify secure sites for new housing. 🗺️

The West Sumatra provincial government is working closely with BNPB to ensure that the relocations are carried out smoothly, aiming to rebuild and support the affected communities in the aftermath of this devastating natural disaster. Stay safe, Sumatra! 🙏
