Cyprus is currently battling an early summer heatwave, marking a record-breaking June with temperatures soaring to 45°C on Friday. The Mediterranean island, a popular destination for travelers and holidaymakers, saw its first heatwave victim: a 91-year-old woman succumbed to heatstroke at Nicosia General Hospital.
Health officials reported that the elderly woman suffered cardiac arrest twice upon arrival at the hospital's accident and emergency department. Charalambos Charilaou, spokesperson for the state health organization, confirmed that the cardiac arrests were directly linked to the extreme heat.
In addition to the tragic loss, five other elderly patients are receiving treatment for severe heatstroke symptoms. Hospitals across the island have been managing cases of heat exhaustion over the past few days as the temperatures continue to climb.
On Friday, Cyprus issued its first red alert for extreme heat, acknowledging the unprecedented conditions. This day stands as the hottest June day ever recorded on the island, highlighting the growing concerns surrounding climate change and its impact on popular tourist destinations.
As Cyprus fans grapple with the intense heat, authorities are urging residents and visitors alike to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities during peak hours, and seek shelter in cool environments to minimize the risks associated with extreme temperatures.
