Emergency teams in central China’s Hunan Province are working around the clock to seal a ruptured dike at Dongting Lake by Tuesday noon, officials announced Sunday. The breach, which began as a 10-meter gap on Friday evening, expanded rapidly, flooding parts of Tuanzhou Township in Yueyang City.
Zhang Yingchun, Hunan Province’s executive vice governor, assured residents that efforts to stabilize the situation are ‘progressing steadily,’ with heavy machinery and personnel mobilized to contain the damage. Over 5,000 residents have been evacuated as a precaution.
Dongting Lake, a critical flood basin along the Yangtze River, has faced recurring seasonal flooding. This incident highlights the balancing act between natural challenges and infrastructure resilience—a key talking point for climate-conscious Gen Z.
Stay tuned for updates as crews work to meet the Tuesday deadline.
