China is taking a major step in wildlife conservation with the launch of its first national-level Crested Ibis Protection and Research Center in Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province! 🌍 Construction begins this September, aiming to supercharge efforts to save this iconic—and once critically endangered—bird species.
Built on the foundation of the existing Shaanxi Hanzhong Crested Ibis National Nature Reserve (established in 2005), the center will focus on scientific research, breeding programs, wild releases, and rescue missions. A collaboration between the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and Shaanxi Province, it’s set to become a global hub for crested ibis conservation. 🦢🔬
Fun fact: The crested ibis, known as the “Asian jewel bird,” was once near extinction, with only seven left in the 1980s. Thanks to decades of effort, over 10,000 now thrive in China—proof that conservation works! This new center could be a game-changer for biodiversity in Asia and beyond.
