Hanjiang River Hit by Fifth Flood Amid Heavy Rains 🌊🚨

China’s Hanjiang River is battling its fifth major flood of 2024 as relentless rains test emergency response systems. Water levels at the Sanhe Dam surged to 42.01 meters Friday night, triggering large-scale reservoir releases to mitigate risks, officials confirmed.

💧 Why it matters: The Pearl River Basin region has faced nonstop downpours since late July, with over 220 million cubic meters of water already diverted from reservoirs. Meanwhile, the Second Songhua River in northeast China saw its first flood this year, with inflow rates hitting 9,010 cubic meters per second at Fengman Reservoir.

🚨 Safety first: Authorities are prioritizing dam inspections and preemptive evacuations in high-risk zones. “Preventing mountain torrents remains critical during this peak flood season,” stated the Ministry of Water Resources.

🌧️ Bigger picture: Scientists warn that extreme weather events are intensifying globally, and East Asia’s monsoon patterns are no exception. With climate models predicting more volatility, adaptive infrastructure and early warning systems are becoming essential lifelines.
