Tropical Storm Debby is ramping up its strength as it charts a direct path toward Florida's Gulf Coast. The National Hurricane Center reported at 8 a.m. Sunday that Debby is currently located about 155 miles southwest of Tampa and 205 miles south-southwest of Cedar Key.
Moving north-northwest at 13 mph, Debby's maximum sustained winds have increased to 60 mph, up from 50 mph just hours earlier. The storm is expected to intensify into a hurricane before making landfall in Florida's Big Bend region.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has urged all residents to prepare for the impending storm. \"I would urge all Floridians to be cognizant of the fact that we are going to have a hurricane hit the state, probably a Category 1, but it could be a little bit more powerful than that,\" he stated during a Sunday morning briefing.
The governor also warned of significant rainfall, potential flooding events, and power outages. \"We are absolutely going to see a lot of rainfall. We are going to see a lot of saturation. We are going to see flooding events. That is going to happen. There is also going to be power outages,\" DeSantis added.
Residents are advised to stay updated on weather reports and follow safety instructions as Debby approaches. Stay safe, Florida!
