🌊 The Yellow River, affectionately known as China's \"mother river\", is a lifeline for over 50 cities across nine provinces and autonomous regions. Despite accounting for just two percent of China's river runoff, it nourishes around 12 percent of the population, irrigates about 15 percent of arable land, and supplies water to more than 50 cities.
But it's not all smooth sailing. 🌿 The Yellow River basin has the largest proportion of water and soil loss areas among China's major river basins. The ecology of the upper, middle, and lower reaches is facing severe degradation, making restoration a tough and slow process, and pollution remains a persistent issue.
In response, Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted symposiums in 2019 and 2021, urging a united effort to promote ecological protection and the high-quality development of the Yellow River. He highlighted the importance of addressing the unique challenges across different sections of the river, ensuring the ecosystem functions as an integrated whole.
Following President Xi's guidance, China has rolled out a series of practical measures to safeguard the river. 💧 Water quality along the main stream is steadily improving, and both the biodiversity at the river’s source and in the Yellow River Delta are on the rise.
Just this Thursday in Lanzhou, Gansu Province's capital, President Xi, also the general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, emphasized taking ecological protection of the entire basin to a new level. He called for significant advancements in green transformation and highlighted the positive impact these efforts will have on the lives of the people. 🌱✨
