Sansha’s Seas Sparkle with Eco-Success!
China’s southernmost city, Sansha in Hainan Province, is making waves in marine conservation, with coral reefs thriving and endangered species like green sea turtles bouncing back! Local efforts have turned the tide for biodiversity, offering a blueprint for eco-revival.
Turtle Power: A Nesting Boom
This year, 20 green sea turtle nests were discovered in the Xisha Islands—a triumph for a species once on the brink. ‘We track nests via real-time alerts,’ said Yu Yangfei from Sansha’s Marine Reserve Administration. Since 2018, over 1,300 natural turtle nestings have been recorded. Patrol teams, like Huang Cheng’s, cheer as hatchlings reach the sea: ‘It’s pure joy seeing their tiny tracks!’
From Barren to Lush: Sansha’s Green Miracle
Once struggling with scarce freshwater, Sansha has grown over 53,000 saplings, achieving 90%+ green coverage in some areas. ‘It’s like planting hope,’ locals say. Plus, 78 seabird species now soar above the islands—40+ call Sansha home!
Coral Comeback & Collective Action
Coral reef restoration zones on Yongxing and Qilianyu islands aim to transplant 260,000+ seedlings. ‘We’re uniting scientists and communities to protect our seas,’ shared Zhang Chenglong of Sansha’s Fishery Bureau. Teamwork makes the dream work!
