The 24th China-European Union (EU) summit is gearing up to take place in Beijing on December 7-8, marking the first in-person meeting since 2019. This significant event will see European Council President Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and EU High Representative Josep Borrell engage in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.
In the lead-up to the summit, Erik Solheim, former Undersecretary-General of the United Nations and Vice President of the Green Belt and Road Development Coalition, shared his insights on the evolving China-EU relationship. Solheim emphasized the importance of revitalizing these ties to drive economic development and address pressing global challenges like climate change.
“Europe and China have immense potential to collaborate and solve some of the major conflicts of our time,” Solheim mentioned. He highlighted that over the past three years, the relationship has faced strains due to factors like the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions. However, he believes that with renewed cooperation, both regions can act as powerful forces for positive change.
Solheim also discussed the concept of strategic autonomy for Europe, echoing French President Emmanuel Macron’s vision. He stressed that Europe should carve out its own path, distinct from both China and the United States, to play a pivotal role on the global stage. “Europe is a massive economy in its own right,” he stated, “and by fostering mutual investments and business collaborations, we can enhance communication and cooperation.
Addressing the balance between maintaining strong ties with both China and the U.S., Solheim pointed out the historical closeness between Europe and the United States. Yet, he noted that Europe shares significant common ground with China, especially in environmental initiatives. “Respect and dialogue are crucial,” he added. “While China and Europe may have different political systems, they are among the fundamental civilizations of humanity. Working together based on mutual respect can lead to effective resolutions of disputes through organizations like the World Trade Organization.”
As the world faces numerous conflicts and challenges, Solheim believes that enhancing China-EU relations is essential for creating a more peaceful and sustainable global order. The upcoming summit in Beijing could be a pivotal moment for fostering this crucial partnership.
