Hungarian Expert Sees China as Opportunity, Not Threat, in EU Relations 🌏✨

As the 24th China-EU Summit gears up for its December 7 convening, insights from global experts are shedding light on the evolving dynamics between China and the European Union. Among these voices is Gladden Pappin, president of the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs, who shares a refreshing perspective on EU-China relations.

🗣️ Pappin emphasizes that China's President Xi Jinping's three global initiatives—the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative—are fundamentally geared towards economic development and peaceful exchange. “Any initiatives oriented toward economic development and peaceful exchange are good ones,” he notes.

🇭🇺 From Hungary's vantage point, China is viewed not as a threat, but as a valuable opportunity. Pappin challenges the prevalent zero-sum mentality, arguing that the world doesn't have to operate on the principle that one’s gain is another’s loss. “We have to push back against this idea that there's a zero-sum mentality in the world,” he states.

🌍 Growing up in the United States, Pappin understands why such a mentality exists—historically, the U.S. was a dominant player, leading to fears that any rise elsewhere could be perceived as a threat. However, China offers a contrasting vision that embraces shared development, fostering mutual growth rather than competition.

💼 Despite the opportunities, challenges remain. Europe has seen some countries withdraw from China's Belt and Road Initiative, raising concerns about economic arrangements. Pappin warns that pulling out could lead to higher costs and reduced industrial development, emphasizing the importance of commitment to these economic partnerships.

🤝 Moving forward, Pappin advocates for embracing cooperative initiatives from both the East and the West, grounded in strong national foundations. By doing so, countries can harness the benefits of global collaboration and drive sustainable economic growth.
