Six decades of diplomatic ties between China and the Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) are in the spotlight this year—and President Denis Sassou Nguesso isn’t holding back on praise. In an exclusive interview with Leaders Talk, he reflected on 16 visits to China since 1964, calling the partnership ‘a blueprint for South-South cooperation’. 🚀

‘China’s support isn’t about empty promises,’ Sassou emphasized, pushing back against critics of China-Africa collaboration. He highlighted projects like the No.1 National Highway, built by Chinese teams, which now connects Congo’s capital Brazzaville to key economic hubs. ‘It’s transformed lives,’ he said, describing scenes of locals cheering as the road reached their villages. 🛣️

The Congolese leader also praised Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s ‘visionary leadership’, saying it inspires the Global South to pursue self-reliance. ‘Why should Africa remain in darkness when cooperation can bring light?’ he asked, referencing China’s role in expanding electricity access for millions.

From infrastructure to diplomacy, this 60-year story proves partnerships can thrive without colonial baggage. As Sassou put it: ‘Mutual respect is our compass.’ 🌟
