Sri Lanka & China Strengthen Ties with New Cooperation Plans 🌏🤝

Sri Lanka, often dubbed the 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean,' is forging stronger bonds with China as both nations revive a historic partnership to boost economic growth and modernization. During his official visit to China, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena sat down with CMG's Zou Yun to discuss deepening collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and honoring the legacy of their 1952 Rubber-Rice Pact—a symbol of mutual trust and support.

From Post-War Recovery to Economic Revival

Gunawardena highlighted China's 'no-strings-attached' aid in Sri Lanka's post-crisis recovery, emphasizing projects like the Hambantota Port and Colombo Port City as game-changers for the island nation. "These projects are not just about infrastructure—they're about creating opportunities for our people," he said. 🌱⚓

The Prime Minister also expressed eagerness to learn from China's advancements in agriculture and fisheries, calling it a "win-win partnership." With Sri Lanka aiming to modernize its economy, Gunawardena stressed the importance of aligning with China's expertise to drive sustainable development.

A Friendship Rooted in History

Reflecting on the 1952 pact that exchanged Sri Lankan rubber for Chinese rice, Gunawardena praised the "original intention" of their alliance: solidarity without political conditions. As both nations look ahead, this spirit continues to shape their vision for a connected, prosperous future. 🌾🤲
