World Bank Group President Ajay Banga has hailed China’s transformative role in tackling climate change and driving sustainable development, calling it a model for the Global South. In an exclusive interview with CMG’s Zou Yun during the China Development Forum, Banga highlighted the country’s journey from relying on international grants to becoming a key donor and knowledge exporter.
A Journey of Growth
Banga, who recently visited rural communities in Hebei Province, emphasized China’s strides in balancing economic growth with environmental action. “China used to pull from the World Bank’s knowledge bank—now it’s feeding it,” he said, referencing the country’s innovative approaches to rural revitalization and green tech.
Lessons for the World
From solar farms to smart agriculture, China’s climate strategies are now being adapted in developing nations. Banga stressed that collaboration is key: “No single country can fix climate change alone. China’s experience in lifting millions out of poverty while cutting emissions offers critical insights.”
What’s Next?
With the World Bank aiming to expand its climate funding, Banga sees China as pivotal in shaping greener policies and financing mechanisms. “The goal isn’t just growth—it’s growth that lifts everyone,” he added, pointing to upcoming partnerships in renewable energy and carbon-neutral infrastructure.
