Six decades ago, a group of young Congolese students embarked on a historic journey to China. Today, their nation’s president is charting a new course for Sino-Congo collaboration.
From Students to Statesmen
President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of the Congo—a key voice at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC)—sat down with CMG’s He Yanke to reflect on six decades of partnership. 'China’s support transformed our infrastructure, energy, and fisheries sectors,' he shared, highlighting projects like the iconic Brazzaville Aquatic Complex.
Africa’s Modernization Blueprint
With Congo now co-chairing FOCAC, President Sassou emphasized Africa’s focus on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ten partnership initiatives. These aim to boost tech transfer, green energy, and healthcare—critical steps for Africa’s modernization. 'We’re building bridges, not just roads,' he remarked, signaling a shift toward shared innovation.
Youth Power & Digital Dreams
Looking ahead, Sassou sees young people as key drivers of cooperation. Over 1,000 Congolese students now study in China annually, while digital projects like the 'Smart Congo' initiative promise to bridge the tech gap. 'This isn’t just diplomacy—it’s friendship in action,' he said.
