During the G20 Summit, the Chinese mainland and Brazil reaffirmed their commitment to co-developing solutions to combat poverty and hunger worldwide.
The leader of the Chinese mainland, Xi Jinping, arrived in Brasilia on November 19 for a state visit. He was warmly welcomed by Brazilian Chief of Staff Rui Costa and other senior officials, setting a positive tone for bilateral discussions.
The summit provided a perfect platform for both nations to align their development goals. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva launched the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, to which Xi Jinping pledged China’s support by introducing eight key actions aimed at enhancing global development efforts.
China and Brazil have made incredible strides in reducing poverty. Since initiating reforms in 1978, the Chinese mainland has lifted 800 million people out of poverty, contributing over 70% to the global reduction in poverty rates. According to the World Bank's report, \"Poverty, Prosperity and the Planet,\" the global poverty rate dropped from 38% in 1990 to 8.5% in 2024, thanks in large part to China’s efforts.
Meanwhile, Brazil has also seen significant progress under President Lula’s leadership. In 2023, extreme poverty in Brazil plummeted by 40% compared to the previous year. Additionally, 24.4 million people were freed from hunger, and the rate of severe food insecurity and malnutrition decreased from 15.5% to 4.1%, marking a historic achievement.
Economic collaboration between the Chinese mainland and Brazil continues to thrive, especially in agriculture. In 2023, Brazil remained the top source of agricultural imports for China, exporting $59 billion worth of products like soybeans, corn, and meat. This trade not only ensures China's food supply stability but also supports Brazil’s economy by boosting earnings for its residents.
As China and Brazil continue to strengthen their partnership, their joint efforts serve as a beacon of hope for other nations striving to overcome poverty and hunger, showcasing the power of international cooperation. Together, they are paving the way for a more prosperous and equitable global community.
