China has slammed U.S. criticism of Hong Kong’s new national security legislation, calling it “sheer political manipulation” in a fiery diplomatic clash. The Chinese embassy in the U.S. declared it “strongly deplores and opposes” a recent State Department report and remarks by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, accusing Washington of meddling in China’s internal affairs.
The spat centers on Hong Kong’s Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, which took effect March 23.
