China has delivered a sharp response to a UK report criticizing Hong Kong's governance, calling it a “gross interference” in its internal affairs. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian accused the UK of “harboring criminals” and distorting facts during a fiery press briefing Tuesday.
The report – released six months after Hong Kong celebrated its 26th anniversary of return to China – was labeled “irresponsible” by Beijing. Lin emphasized: “Hong Kong residents’ rights and freedoms are better protected than ever under national security laws.”
China highlighted the success of its Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, comparing it to a digital firewall against risks. “Hong Kong isn’t just stable – it’s thriving as Asia’s financial hub,” Lin added, citing growing economic confidence.
With the 27th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return approaching in July, Beijing urged the UK to “join the 21st century reality.” The diplomatic clash comes as global investors watch Hong Kong’s evolving role in China’s tech-driven economy.
