The World Health Assembly (WHA) has rejected a proposal for the Taiwan region to participate as an observer for the 8th consecutive year, sparking renewed diplomatic discussions about cross-strait relations. 🌍⚖️
‘One-China Principle Non-Negotiable’
Chen Xu, China’s envoy to the UN in Geneva, stated the decision confirms that \"Taiwan independence\" has no future. He emphasized that Taiwan’s involvement in global health must align with the one-China principle, upheld by UN resolutions since 1971.
\"The Democratic Progressive Party authorities’ separatist stance has destroyed the political basis for participation,\" Chen said.
What’s Next for Taiwan’s Role?
While excluded from the WHA, the Taiwan region retains limited WHO access:
- 🚨 An International Health Regulations Contact Point for real-time health data
- 👩⚕️ 21 batches of health experts participated in WHO technical activities last year (in personal capacities)
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reaffirmed Thursday: \"Taiwan is a province of China\", aligning with UNGA Resolution 2758.
