In a significant move towards peace, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged more countries to back a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis during a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Beijing.
Wang emphasized China’s unwavering commitment to fostering peaceful dialogues, highlighting the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations involved. \"All efforts beneficial to peacefully solving the crisis should be supported,\" he stated.
He praised Switzerland for its proactive role in organizing peace conferences, mentioning that China has consistently provided constructive suggestions to the Swiss side, which have been well-received.
Wang also pointed out that with numerous conferences happening globally, China remains independent in deciding its participation and the manner in which it engages. He stressed the need for more objective, balanced, and constructive voices in addressing the Ukraine crisis.
Highlighting international cooperation, Wang revealed that China and Brazil have recently issued six common understandings aimed at de-escalating the situation. These consensuses advocate for:
- No expansion of the battlefield
- No escalation of fighting
- No provocation by any party
- Opposition to the use of nuclear weapons
- Protection of nuclear power plants and other peaceful nuclear facilities
He noted that these understandings have garnered support from 45 countries across five continents, with 26 countries either confirming their support or considering ways to join. Both Russia and Ukraine have acknowledged most of these consensuses, reflecting a shared global aspiration for peace.
Wang concluded by welcoming more nations to support and join the six common understandings, reinforcing China’s dedication to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine crisis.
