President Xi Honors Veterans as ‘Precious Treasure’ Ahead of PLA Anniversary
With China’s Army Day around the corner, President Xi Jinping has doubled down on efforts to improve support for veterans, calling them a “precious treasure” essential to national development. The move comes as the country prepares to celebrate the 97th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) on August 1.
Modernizing Support, Ensuring Honor
In a recent directive, Xi emphasized reforms to better protect veterans’ rights and interests, stressing that “military service must remain an honorable occupation” worthy of societal respect. He urged veterans to uphold their traditions while contributing to China’s modernization goals—a nod to their role in shaping the nation’s future.
Celebrating Heroes
At a national conference, 397 veterans were honored alongside 100 model units and 80 individuals for their dedication to veterans’ affairs. State Councilor Shen Yiqin echoed Xi’s message, reinforcing the government’s commitment to creating a “supportive ecosystem” for ex-service personnel.
Why it matters: With over 57 million veterans in China, this push highlights efforts to integrate their skills into broader economic and social progress—key to building national pride and unity.
