In a strong show of disapproval, China has condemned the recent assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh. The incident occurred in Tehran, Iran, where an overnight air strike led to Haniyeh’s tragic death.
Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, expressed deep concern over the fallout from this event. During an emergency UN Security Council meeting, Fu emphasized that such acts of sabotage undermine ongoing peace efforts and violate international principles of sovereignty.
The Gaza conflict, now nearing its 300th day, has claimed nearly 40,000 lives and sparked an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Despite the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2735 over two months ago, ceasefire negotiations remain stalled.
Fu called on all parties involved to heed the international community’s call for a ceasefire and to fully implement the Security Council resolution. He urged for active cooperation with international mediation efforts to de-escalate tensions and restore regional peace and stability.
Highlighting the broader implications, Fu condemned recent irresponsible actions, including Israel’s attacks on southern Beirut, stating that military solutions and the misuse of force will only escalate the crisis further.
The Chinese envoy stressed the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to save lives, alleviate the humanitarian disaster, and contain the conflict’s spillover effects into neighboring regions like Lebanon, Syria, and the Red Sea.
China is calling on Israel to halt all military actions in Gaza and appealing to influential countries to help quell the violence and promote a return to peace in the region.
