China and Ethiopia are writing a new chapter in South-South cooperation as leaders from both nations pledged deeper collaboration during the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing. Chinese President Xi Jinping called the partnership “an example of friendly China-Africa relations” during talks with Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed Ali this Wednesday.
Iron-Clad Friendship: Xi highlighted decades of mutual support, noting both countries have stood together against external interference while pursuing development goals. The two nations now aim to transform Ethiopia into a regional transport hub through rail-sea networks – a key part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative in East Africa.
Next-Level Cooperation: Plans include:
- Building East Africa’s first rail-sea intermodal transport system
- Creating a BRI “demonstration zone” for sustainable infrastructure
- Coordinating on global issues through UN and BRICS platforms
PM Abiy praised Chinese investments that have “supercharged Ethiopia’s growth,” particularly in manufacturing and tech sectors. With bilateral trade hitting $4.3 billion in 2023, both leaders agreed to further align Ethiopia’s “economic miracle” with China’s development vision.
