Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Singapore’s Vivian Balakrishnan in Beijing this week, pledging deeper collaboration in a world craving stability. “We’re two forces working for peace,” Wang said, highlighting shared goals in tech, trade, and regional security.
Both nations are navigating major domestic priorities this year, with Wang emphasizing their “all-round, future-oriented partnership.” Plans include upgrading visa-free travel perks , expanding ASEAN cooperation, and aligning development strategies to fuel what Wang called “regional integration on steroids.”
Balakrishnan doubled down on Singapore’s ‘one-China’ stance, firmly opposing Taiwan independence. With 2025 marking 35 years of diplomatic ties, he teased “big-ticket collaborations” ahead, including high-level exchanges and joint pushes for fairer global trade rules through platforms like the WTO.
The duo also nodded to China’s recent Africa summit success , calling it a win for the Global South. Both sides vowed to keep East Asia’s leadership meetings “on track for tangible wins” this year.
