China is urging wealthier countries to step up and help African nations tackle rising debt pressures. During a press briefing Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized the need for 'fair, equal, and practical' global cooperation with Africa.
‘International partners must treat Africa as an equal, not just a charity case,’ Mao stated, echoing Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent remarks. She called on developed economies and financial institutions to ‘deliver tangibly’ by restructuring debts and supporting sustainable development goals.
The appeal comes as many African countries face economic strain from pandemic recovery costs and global inflation. China, a major investor in African infrastructure projects through its Belt and Road Initiative, has increasingly positioned itself as a advocate for Global South solidarity.
‘This isn’t just about money – it’s about rewriting outdated rules of engagement,’ said Lagos-based economist Amara Nwosu. ‘When major players like China push for systemic change, it forces everyone to rethink how development partnerships work.’
