Israeli troops have taken control of key areas along the Syria-Israel border and launched targeted strikes against “strategic weapons systems” in Syria, escalating tensions in the region. Here’s what you need to know:
Border Clash Heats Up
On Monday, Israeli tanks advanced into Quneitra, a Syrian city near the occupied Golan Heights, according to local sources. Drones buzzed overhead as forces reportedly reached a governorate building. Meanwhile, airstrikes near Damascus targeted weapons storage facilities linked to “long-range missiles” and other arms Israel claims could reach “extremist groups.”
Why Now?
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar blamed militants for crossing into a UN-monitored buffer zone over the weekend, violating a decades-old disengagement agreement. “We acted to protect our communities,” he said, adding that commandos temporarily seized a Syrian outpost on Mount Hermon.
Militant Rule in Damascus?
Following rapid territorial gains by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham-led groups, Damascus saw new strict rules Monday: a 5 p.m. curfew, threats of jail for looters, and orders for public workers to return to jobs. The University of Tartous announced plans to resume classes Tuesday amid the chaos.
With Syria’s fragile security situation, analysts warn further clashes could destabilize the region.
