Supreme Court Rejects Trump’s Request to Delay Hush Money Sentencing

The U.S. Supreme Court has made a significant decision by declining to postpone President-elect Donald Trump's sentencing in his hush money case. This means that Trump will face sentencing in a New York courtroom this Friday.

Trump's legal team argued that the trial court in New York County \"wrongly refused to recognize the immunity from prosecution of the president-elect during the period of the presidential transition,\" referencing a July SCOTUS ruling that granted him \"presidential immunity.\" 📜⚖️

Despite attempts by Trump's lawyers to have the ongoing criminal case paused while appealing the immunity issue, the Supreme Court, with its 6-to-3 conservative majority, denied the request. This decision ensures that Trump's legal proceedings will move forward as scheduled.

At 78 years old, Trump, who pleaded not guilty, is expected to appear virtually at the sentencing hearing. Cheryl Bader, a law professor at Fordham University in New York, commented, \"He doesn't want to be sentenced because that is the official judgment of him being a convicted felon.\" 🗣️

In May 2024, a New York jury found Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records in an effort to conceal hush money payments to a porn star during his first presidential campaign in 2016.

Trump's legal team has filed a lawsuit at an appeals court in New York against Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Judge Juan Merchan, challenging the judge's denial of the presidential immunity motions.

The upcoming sentencing hearing in Lower Manhattan is set for Friday morning, with Trump indicating his intention to appear virtually. The New York Times remarked, \"After months of delay, the sentencing will now formalize Mr. Trump's conviction, cementing his status as the first felon to occupy the Oval Office.\" 📅🔒
