The tension in the Red Sea continues to escalate as Yemen's Houthi group claims responsibility for a fresh missile and drone assault on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier. This marks the fifth attack since the carrier's arrival in the region, with the latest offensive lasting nine intense hours.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea announced on al-Masirah TV that the operation successfully forced the aircraft carrier to retreat to the far north of the Red Sea. \"This attack supports the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and responds to the recent U.S.-British-Israeli air strikes on our sites,\" Sarea stated.
Last Friday, a joint air assault by Israel and the U.S.-led naval coalition targeted key infrastructure in Sanaa, Amran, and Hodeidah, resulting in one death and nine injuries. These strikes are part of ongoing efforts to counter Houthi influence in northern Yemen.
Since November 2023, the Houthis have intensified their rocket and drone attacks on Israel, aiming to disrupt Israeli-linked shipping and show solidarity with Palestinians amidst their conflict with Israel. In retaliation, the U.S.-led coalition has been conducting regular air raids on Houthi positions since January 2024, prompting the Houthis to expand their targets to include U.S. warships.
The conflict in Yemen, which began in 2014 when the Houthis took control of northern regions, shows no signs of abating. As both sides continue their strategic maneuvers, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution to the ongoing turmoil.
