EU Delays Retaliatory Measures Despite Backlash

The European Union has suspended planned tariffs on $108B worth of U.S. goods just days before their August 7 deadline, sparking heated debates among member states. The move, announced via emergency procedure, aims to buy time for negotiations but has drawn sharp criticism from leaders like Germany's Lars Klingbeil, who called the EU's stance "weak."

Deal or No Deal? 🔍

The suspended tariffs were part of a broader trade agreement requiring the EU to boost U.S. energy imports and investments. However, 50% U.S. tariffs on European steel and aluminum remain, with promises to transition to a quota system later. Critics like former EU diplomat Josep Borrell slammed the deal as "politically submissive," arguing it undermines Europe's economic autonomy.

Unrealistic Promises? ⚡

Key sticking points include a $750B U.S. natural gas purchase pledge—nearly impossible since EU governments don’t control private companies’ buying decisions. Analysts say the six-month tariff delay gives Brussels breathing room, but with France and Germany openly dissenting, future talks could get messy. As Borrell put it: "This isn’t strategic—it’s survival mode."
