Sydney’s marathon is sprinting toward history!
The city’s bid to join the elite World Marathon Majors just got a major boost as the 2024 race sold out with 24,000 runners – the biggest field ever for an Australian marathon. Organizers are now eyeing a spot alongside giants like Tokyo, Boston, and London in the prestigious global series by 2025.
From Olympics to Global Stage?
Born from the 2000 Olympic Games, the Sydney Marathon is in its second year of evaluation. Race director Wayne Larden called it a “momentous year”, promising a “world-class event” to showcase Australia’s passion for endurance sports. Last year’s race drew 17,000 runners and 100,000+ spectators – but 2024’s new September 15 course could be a game-changer.
The Road Ahead
While Sydney’s growth is impressive (entries jumped 41% since 2023!), it still trails established events like London, which saw 840,318 applications for 2025. Will the Harbour City’s iconic bridges and waterfront views help it cross the finish line? Runners – and the World Marathon Majors committee – will decide soon!
