France Wins Bid, But There's a Catch
The French Alps scored a major victory this week as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) conditionally named it the host of the 2030 Winter Olympics! 🎉 However, organizers must secure government financial guarantees by March 2025 to lock in the deal.
French President Emmanuel Macron personally vouched for the bid, telling IOC members: 'We delivered Paris 2024, and we'll deliver this.' His promise comes amid political uncertainty, with France’s upcoming government needing to formalize financial commitments by October 1.
Why the Alps?
The bid aims to unite northern and southern French Alps regions, leveraging infrastructure from past Winter Games in Chamonix (1924), Grenoble (1968), and Albertville (1992). David Lappartient, head of the French Olympic Committee, called the decision a 'feeling of happiness' and highlighted plans to ride the momentum of Paris 2024.
With an overwhelming 84 out of 88 IOC votes, France is set to become the first nation to host Summer and Winter Games just six years apart. But the clock is ticking—Paris 2024 kicks off THIS FRIDAY! 🗼⏰
