In a heartbreaking turn of events, 26-year-old Swiss Olympic snowboarder Sophie Hediger has lost her life in an avalanche at the Arosa resort in Switzerland, according to the country's skiing federation.
Sophie was a proud member of Switzerland's snowboard cross team at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, where she competed in both the women's individual and mixed team events. Her passion for snowboarding was evident as she achieved her first two World Cup podium finishes during the 2023-24 season, with her best result being a second-place finish in St. Moritz in January.
Tragically, the avalanche occurred on Monday, cutting Sophie’s promising career short. "We are shocked and our thoughts are with Sophie's family, to whom we offer our deepest condolences," said Swiss-Ski CEO Walter Reusser. "(She lost her life) tragically, brutally and far too soon."
Sophie's dedication and achievements have left a lasting impact on the snowboarding community, and she will be deeply missed by fans and fellow athletes alike.
