Algeria Apologizes After Amoura’s AFCON Gesture Sparks Controversy 🌍⚽

Algeria’s football federation has stepped up to mend fences after forward Mohamed Amoura’s controversial gesture during last year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) ignited a diplomatic firestorm. The incident, which occurred following Algeria’s 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Morocco, drew sharp criticism for seemingly mocking Congolese superfan Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, aka "Lumumba VEA."

Mboladinga, known for his frozen pose with one arm raised—a tribute to DRC independence icon Patrice Lumumba—became an unintended target of Amoura’s celebration. The player later apologized on Instagram, stating he was "unaware of the gesture’s historical significance" and expressing regret to Congolese fans. 🫢

In a bid to smooth tensions, an Algerian delegation visited DRC supporters in Rabat, gifting Mboladinga an Algerian jersey with his nickname. The move, attended by DRC Sports Minister Didier Budimbu, emphasized cross-cultural respect amid the heated tournament drama. 🤝

With AFCON’s global spotlight, the incident highlights how sports can bridge—or briefly strain—international ties. As one fan tweeted: "Football isn’t just goals; it’s about heart and history." 💔⚡
