Shanghai is making big moves to support families! Starting June 1, the city will cover 12 assisted reproductive services under its health insurance plan—a first-of-its-kind effort to address China's declining birth rates. Think egg retrieval, artificial insemination, and embryo transfers, all now partially funded!
According to the Shanghai Healthcare Security Bureau, 70% of costs for key procedures like egg retrieval (priced at ¥2,500 or ~$352 per session) will be covered. Patients can claim this benefit up to three times at the same hospital.
Dr. Zhang Ting from Renji Hospital’s reproductive department says this ‘alleviates economic and psychological pressure’ for families struggling with fertility challenges. With 17 out of 20 local clinics already onboard, the policy aims to make parenthood more accessible.
This bold step aligns with broader efforts to tackle China’s aging population—proving that science and policy can team up for societal change.
