Tanzania just rewrote the rules of travel with its first electric standard gauge railway (SGR) kicking off commercial runs between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro! The 300km route, launched Friday, is part of a mega 1,596km infrastructure project that’ll eventually connect five regions.
\"This isn’t just a train—it’s a growth engine,\" said Tanzania Railways boss Masanja Kadogosa. The electric SGR will slash travel times and turbocharge cargo movement across the country.
Need for speed: By July 2024, these sleek trains will zip at 160km/h, cutting the Dar-Morogoro trip from 4 hours by bus to just 2! Over 1,400 lucky passengers rode free on the debut journey, with President Samia Suluhu Hassan footing the bill as a launch celebration.
Deputy Transport Minister David Kihenzile called it a \"historic leap\" for Tanzania’s economy and connectivity. The project’s next phase will stretch all the way to Mwanza, reshaping how East Africa moves!
